The Virginia legislative elections have recently concluded and shifted the political standings in the state. While the state has been known to be red or purple, the outcome shows a slight advantage for the Democratic Party, with a majority of Democratic delegates now apart of the state government. This Democratic lean can also be seen in the Virginia Senate, which currently holds a Democratic majority as well. With this blue tilt, GOP Senator Glenn Youngkin continues in office for his term, and will have to navigate working with his new democratic leaning statehouse.

With all this tension around the elections, history has been made in Virginia. I wanted to put a spotlight on one of our newly elected senators, Danica Roem. The former democratic delegate for the 13th district, Manassas, has been elected to the state senate representing the democratic party as of Nov 7th. She will be the first transgender senator in Virginia, making history for the state. Her campaign circled around advocating for the LGBTQIA+ children in her district, and now Virginia.

I’d also like to announce Up Next's first collaboration! Our team of writers will be interviewing Ian Lovejoy. Lovejoy, the 41 year old born in Charleston, West Virginia, has recently been elected to the Virginia House of Delegates as a republican representing the 22nd District. The Virginia Tech graduate, formerly served as a Manassas City councilman for two terms in 2012, he founded Resilient Hiring Solutions, and owns an art gallery with his wife. We are excited for the opportunity to interview him this upcoming week, and get to know more about him and his positions for his upcoming term.
