Strike! The 2024 World Series in Review

The Los Angeles Dodgers secured their 8th championship in the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees. For anyone unfamiliar with Major League Baseball Championships, the World Series consists of seven series where a team must clinch four winning games. The World Series wrapped up their fifth and final game on October 30th with the final score of 7-6. Here are some highlights from the games. 



Game 1: The Start of the Series 


The World Series hit off on Friday, October 25th in Los Angeles. During the bottom of the 5th inning, the LA Dodgers’ Will Smith (16) slammed the ball, sending the first home plate scoring drive of Enrique Hernández (8).The Yankees then took on a 2-1 lead in the top of the 6th inning after Giancarlo Stanton (27) scored a high and deep home run into the left field. The Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani (17) scored a double during the bottom of the 8th inning and continued to run to third base. Mookie Betts (50) of the Dodgers then hit the ball to center field, allowing Ohtani to run home, tying the score 2-2. Tension rose during the top of the 10th inning as Jazz Chisholm (13) of the Yankees scored, giving them the advantage of 3-2. Finally, Freddie Freeman (5) was praised as he led his team to victory during the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring a massive grand slam for the win. The Dodgers celebrated their first victory with the winning score of 6-3.

Game 2: Home Runs for the Win 


The LA Dodgers took home their second win in Game 2 of the series at home on October 26th. The second game of the series was fanatical as many home runs were scored. The Dodgers took the lead with 1-0 as Tommy Edman (25) scored a solo home run in the 2nd inning. Juan Soto (22) continued to tie the game 1-1 after also scoring a home run in the top of the 3rd inning. With the first base filled up, Teoscar Hernández (37) scored the Dodgers two points with an exciting home run, leading the game 3-1. Additionally, Freddie Freeman scored the LA team another solo home run, leading the score 4-1. At the top of the 9th, Juan Soto scored once again after Stanton batted towards the left field. The New York Yankees lost the game yet again in the World Series with the final score of 4-2. 



Game 3: The Brink of a Losing Title


Growing concern for the Yankees heightened as they lost their third consecutive game in the World Series. Game 3 of the MLB championships took place in New York this time on Monday October 28th. Freddie Freeman opened the game with a home run during the top of the 1st inning, bringing home 2 points for the Dodgers. In the top of the 3rd, Mookie Betts’s scoring drive brought home Tommy Edman, leading the Dodgers 3-0. Gavin Lux (9) vexed Yankee fans as he stole second base and ran home with a single play made by Kiké Hernández at the top of the 6th. The LA Dodgers lead the game 4-0. Light finally shed for the Yankees as Alex Verdugo (24) scored a 2-run home run, ending the game with the final score of 4-2. 



Game 4: A Yankees’ Comeback 


The fourth game of the World Series was the New York Yankees’ last chance to earn a potential championship. For them, it was win or go home, and at last, they finally won. Freddie Freeman opened yet again by scoring a home run, leading the Dodgers 2-0. The New York Yankees’ Alex Verdugo (24) sent Anthony Volpe home (11), tightening the score to 2-1 in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Soon, the Yankees stadium cheered with excitement as Volpe hit a sweeping grand slam, bringing the Yankees the lead 5-2. This was the New York Yankees’ first grand slam in the World Series since 1998. Will Smith of the Dodgers scored his first home run in the world series, still trailing the Yankees 5-3. With the 3rd base full in the top of the 5th inning, Freddie Freeman’s play which was ultimately ruled safe by the umpires after review, bringing home another score for the LA Dodgers. Yankees catcher, Austin Wells (28), further advanced the Yankees 6-4 after scoring his second ever postseason home run during the bottom of the 6thinning. More exhilaration filled the stadium in the bottom of the 8th as Volpe turned a single into a double, sending Verdugo home to make the game 7-4. Furthermore, with the bases loaded, Yankees’ Gleyber Torres (25) scored them another home run, progressing the score 10-4. Finally, Aaron Judge’s (99) massive hit towards the left field led to the final scoring drive of the fourth game in the World Series. The Yankees clinched their first win with the final score of 11-4.

Game 5: The Dodgers Win 


Game 5 of the World Series would finally give the Dodgers the 2024 World Series Championship title. The game took place on October 30thin New York. Despite having previously lost tremendously against the Yankees, they would make their comeback. Aaron Judge opened the game with a two-point scoring home run in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Yankees would then continue to score another home run with Jazz Chisholm advancing the score 3-0. Alex Verdugo additionally hit infield, continuing to secure the Yankees’ lead 4-0. Giancarlo Stanton later scored the Yankees another home run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. 

The Dodgers finally bounced back in the game during the 5thinning. They scored their first point thanks to Mookie Betts’ batting, making the score 5-1. With all bases loaded, Freddie Freeman’s 2-run drive advanced the score 5-3. Tensions rose as Teoscar Hernández’s two run double tied the game 5-5. The Yankees took back the lead after Giancarlo Stanton’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 6th. A Sacrifice fly is a term used in baseball when a batter hits a ball outfield or towards foul territory, allowing a runner to score. Another sacrifice fly was made by the Dodgers’ Gavin Lux in the top of the 8thinning, tying the game once again. Betts also hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Edman to home plate and securing the final point of the game. The Los Angeles Dodgers were named the 2024 World Series Champions with the final score of 7-6.
