From Elections to Enterprises; The Role of AI in Shaping 2024

By: Lauryn Carr

Remember when AI was just helping us draft papers? Well, in 2024, it is being utilized to reshape strategies of elections and refine the very fabric of the corporate world.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology and artificial intelligence, the year 2024 marks a focal moment where these innovations are transforming not only the way we conduct elections, but also how businesses operate and how data analytics is performed.

As we approach the 2024 election, technology has become a key tool for political campaigns and voter engagement. The New York Times reported that the Republican National Committee shared a video featuring AI generated images displaying doomsday scenarios. They spoke on how this took place after President Biden announced his re-election bid, as Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida posted fake images of former President Donald J. Trump with Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Artificial intelligence also plays a role in predicting voter behavior and election outcomes. Predictive analytics, powered by AI, allow campaigns to analyze voter opinions, preferences, and trends, enabling them to tailor their messages and strategies accordingly. As reported by The Hill the Democratic Party experimented with fundraising messages crafted by artificial intelligence in the spring. Research shows that these messages were more effective at encouraging engagement and donations than the copy written strictly by humans.

Additionally, AI is strengthening election security. The detection and prevention of cyber threats have become more efficient with AI algorithms constantly monitoring the election format. This ensures the ethics of voter data and the election process. However, as technology advances, so does the refinement of deepfake technology, which is a significant challenge to political discourse.

According to Brookings, new technologies enable people to monetize discontent and make money off other people’s fears, anxieties, or anger, due to AI’s ability of creating persuasive messages. They also state how this upcoming year is worrisome due to the lack of guardrails or disclosure requirements that shield voters against fake news, disinformation, or false narratives. So, how is AI modifying the world beyond politics? The corporate world is experiencing a technological revolution of its own. Automation and AI-driven decision-making are reshaping business operations. AI-powered chatbots are now common in customer service, providing efficient responses to customer’s questions. Supply chain management benefits from predictive analytics, optimizing coordination and reducing costs. According to Business Insider, Insider surveyed 68 founders for their 2023 predictions about the industries they think would gain market value in the coming year. They mentioned innovations in healthcare, wellness, and supply chains, but the most commented on was AI.

Data analytics has seen a great evolution in the age of AI. Massive datasets are now processed and interpreted by AI algorithms, revealing ideas that previously could not be thought of. Real-time data analysis enables companies and decision makers to provide contemporary information, allowing for quick responses to changing circumstances.

AI-powered data visualization and reporting tools are making data more accessible and actionable. The ability to tell compelling data-driven stories is becoming a valuable skill. According to CSIS, researchers at Oxford and Yale believe that there is a 50% chance of AI excelling more efficiently than humans in all tasks, including campaigning, in only 45 years. Data scientists and AI experts are in high demand, with job markets requiring specialized knowledge and expertise in handling these advanced technologies. Opportunities for career growth in data analytics and AI-related fields continue to expand. Considering that a lot of influencing also occurs over social media, according to Brennan Center, platforms should devote more resources and attention to identifying and removing coordinated bots and labeling deepfakes that could influence elections. They also state how utilizing AI to make content could result in officials losing credibility that is essential to their brand.

While AI and technology offer immense potential, they also present challenges and ethical considerations. Data privacy and security are vital issues. Balancing the advantages of using data to make decisions with the need to protect people's privacy requires strict rules and careful handling of data. As technology evolves rapidly, individuals and businesses must engage in continuous upskilling to address these challenges effectively.

While AI has already made waves in generating papers and research, its growing impact on shaping the 2024 election and the corporate world is evident. The impact of AI on these domains, from advancing campaign strategies to reshaping business operations, raises important questions about what the next step humans will take to balance technological advancement, ethics, and the need for continuous adaptation in a rapidly evolving landscape.
